Sea Smoke and Lemon Light...

February 12, 2015

This morning I woke up to a partially cloudy day, but the light in the sky was a Lemon Yellow. I geared up and went out to take some photographs. I decided to head towards the Village of Popham. As I was passing Pond Light I decided to pull over. The road has at least 5 feet of snow piled up along the edges. I climbed to the top of the snow bank and could not believe the sight before me.

Every thing was reflecting the Lemon Yellow sky and the Sea Smoke was rolling off the breaking waves.

The clouds were Yellow, Lavender and Seafoam Green. It was a party for my eyes and the sweetest song in my heart. I was stunned by the raw beauty of this rugged spot.

Sea Smoke is a condition that happens when the warm ocean, in this case 43degrees hits the Artic air which was on this day -7degrees. This colliding of two world causes steam, or smoke and the effect is mesmerizing and quite unbelievable.

Some very interesting facts about our Pond Island National Wildlife Refuge.
It is the island in the mouth of the Kennebec River adjacent to Popham Beach.
Pond Island NWR has a surface area of 10 acres (4.0 ha).[1] It is one of the smallest refuges in the United States National Wildlife Refuge system. It is part of the Town of Phippsburg.
Pond Island National Wildlife is one of the five refuges that together make up the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuge, along with Petit Manan, Cross Island, Franklin Island, and Seal Island.

What a world. I love this place I call the Wilderland.
